White Lies: Forgotten Faith is a pulp painting created by the artist as a response to political issues of the time. Living in the small town of Keswick, Iowa, he listened to the world news while he worked. Hungerford formed a low-relief topographic surface by pouring cups of short cotton fiber over a large paper mold screen and allowing the wet paper sit and settle overnight. Next, the artist sprayed the surface with finely beaten black pulp. Hungerford made a line in the surface by using a strong spray of water to separate the fibers, creating what almost looks like a photograph in the paper. With a brush, Hungerford lastly applied the red bowl, cross, and tongue. Hungerford taught many classes at Pyramid over the years, generously sharing his knowledge and papermaking experience.
