Tornado Series: Cyclops is a pulp painting with woodcut overlay, created as a collaborative effort between the Southern artist Ke Francis and mid-western artist Rick Hungerford. Francis, known as a raconteur and knowledgeable printer as well as an experienced multi-media installation artist, met Hungerford through the international traveling museum project Crossing Over Changing Places , coordinated by scholar Jane Famer. Francis and Hungerford corresponded over several months to plan the complicated pulp painted sheets that would serve as the substrate to edition the black inked woodblock matrix image. In Pyramid’s Riverdale studios Hungerford, Frederick, and several assistants created the base sheets and Francis arrived for the final printing. The Hechinger Company selected some unique monotypes, printed by Susan J. Goldman for Francis, for their “tool collection” while the Tornado Series: Cyclops was being editioned.
The print is also held in the Hechinger Collection.
