Square is a sugar-lift etching on custom made, off-white abaca sheets of paper that were torn, then collaged with a pink stripe for the printed edition. Okura was not sure about making a print at first. Once he was given the chance to apply his direct brush marks onto a zinc plate for the sugar-lift etching process, he felt more comfortable. In addition to several other sugar-lift etchings, Okura created various pulp paintings while at Pyramid.
Okura’s work can be found in the following collections: The Private Collection of Jane M. Farmer holds Round , a similar sugar-lift print work created at the same time; The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan holds the pulp paintings produced at Pyramid in their permanent collection.
Papermakers: Helen Frederick, Tracy Krumm
Printer: Susan J. Goldman
