Place I is a large two-plate etching referring to the pleasure the artist took in comparing views from his windows in his Bethesda home with those in his location in Florida. Gross worked with Susan J. Goldman, who created the etched plates, to help retain the spontaneity of his first experience in the etching process made on smaller plates, all of which interpreted drawings from his sketchbook. Gross refers to his mark making as “in the mind’s eye,” while also utilizing photographs of particular places to help recall the memories of these places. Here, the landscape colors are as fresh as the linear markings.
