William Kennedy, alias Turner or Gleason, was arrested December 18,1885 in Washington, DC for being a “Suspicious Character”. His mugshot, upon which this print is based, is from 19th century DC Metropolitan Police Identification Books from the National Archives.
An article in the Washington Post from December 19, 1885 reveals more details about his arrest: he and two other men were known bank thieves, reported to the police after arriving from New York and found lurking around Lewis Johnson & Co.’s bank. They were not charged, but photographed and put on a train back to New York.
This print is one of a series of portraits using this collection of photographs and supporting research as inspiration.
