I teach art at a high school in Kensington, MD. My goal is to use art as a vehicle to empower student voice and promote mental health.
This print was created as an exemplar for the “I Am/We Are” printmaking unit I created this winter. The project gave students a chance to represent themselves, using collographic word tiles that they created. Their work included phrases such as: “I Am A Motivated Hispanic Student”, “Proud Son of Immigrants“, “Powerful, Successful, Independent Self“ and “Beautiful, Black, Queer Woman.” Students also shared concerns with the phrases such as: “Protect Queer Students” and “Time’s up! End Racism Now.”
The backward-facing “r“ in teacher was initially a mistake - one that many people make by forgetting to reverse letters when printmaking. I chose to deliberately leave the mistake, reinforcing the notion for students that mistakes happen - and that’s okay.
