Artist: Pamela Harris Lawton
Dr. Lawton, a fifth-generation educator and native of Washington, DC, is the Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair in Art Education at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She earned a BA degree in Studio Art and Sociology, University of Virginia; an MFA in Printmaking, Howard University; and an EdDCTA (Doctor of Education in the College Teaching of Art) from Teachers College, Columbia University. Honors include a Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the University of Edinburgh, associate artist at the Tate Exchange in London, and artist residencies in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and the Montpelier Cultural Arts Center, Laurel, MD. In addition to numerous publications, presentations, and exhibitions, Lawton’s artworks are in collections at: National Museum of Women in the Arts; Tate Britain Library; Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Edinburgh; Virginia Commonwealth University Cabell Library Special Collection of Artist’s Books; the College of Health and Human Services, University of North Carolina at Charlotte; Teachers College, Columbia University; Morgan State University; Georgetown University; Frederick Douglass Museum and Cultural Center; Washington, D.C. Superior Court; and the Florence and Eugene E. Myers Foundation.
