Word of Mouth is a letterpress book project that aims to visually describe the experience of lip reading. The cover page says the title Word of Mouth, but underneath each individual word are 10 other words that, based on consonant sounds, syllables, and mouth shape, are other possibilities for what that word might sound like. Word of Mouth is coil bound with trisected pages that can be turned independently of one another, creating an exquisite corpse-style book that allows the reader to create many different word combinations.
I aim to describe my recent experience with sudden hearing loss, disability, and grief using material, text, and image. I am interested in how grief can be intertwined with nostalgia, and how I can invoke that sense of time using experimental fiber in hand papermaking and images that reference found ephemera and collections.
