Planet in Peril: WATER

- June Linowitz
My Planet in Peril series is contemporary in the true sense of the word – belonging and occurring in the present. Mankind has never before contemplated the looming and imminent chaos of the destruction of our planet as we know it. Since ancient times mankind has evolved a system to portray the health of our planet. The four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water have, for centuries and cross cultures, been a way to examine the state of our world. When the four elements are in balance, the world is in balance. This is clearly not the case nowadays. Fire, flood, drought, and hurricanes have become common occurrences. The existence of life on this planet is imperiled.
In creating the Planet in Peril series it was important to me that I express my concern for the climate in a new and engaging way. I wanted the viewer to be seduced into experiencing the work, to wonder what media has been used and to be enticed into examining the message. I tried, as nearly as I could, to make the work beautiful and engaging and thus inviting. I decided to compose the core of each artwork from eight pieces of handmade abaca paper that had been sewn together. The earth is coming apart and I wanted to emphasize this by the sewing and visible edges of the paper. I also wanted to construct a way to display the work that wasn’t safe and contained but was immediate and encroached on the surroundings. I wanted each piece to be large enough to be a presence, to be able to fill the viewer’s field of vision. I therefore created a “frame” for each piece from dyed and shaped cotton canvas reinforced with beeswax and wood. Each work has a dowel in the back and is intended to be hung like a tapestry.
