11033 tells the story of Mary Morst, a black women who bears twins while imprisoned in 1914. The book is a letter she is writing to her children about their future. It consists of a clay body, sculptured to represent black female bodies and the labor of child bearing. It is both a codex book and a free standing sculpture.
The book is based on research conducted at the Virginia State Library. The use of artist books allows me to incorporate research and artistic techniques. This is an edition of 50 books that was created in a residency at Women's Studio Workshop .
