The Double Fuck
- Risograph print
- 17 x 11 in
- Melissa Malzkuhn
Know Your Fucks is a post apocalyptic spin on absurdity; drawing from the rigidity of Russian Constructivism and pushing it into pop-culture by combining the fluorescent pink and blue inks of the Japanese made Risograph. The goal is to challenge the boundaries of comfort, representation through visual language, symmetry and imagination.
The point of this series, what I wanted to depict, is how glorious rich sign language is. Take something as mundane as the middle finger - there is much more to a fuck - in fact, there are hidden narratives. The F Bomb is atomic, if you unleash your flurries of furious fucks. The Jet Fighter Fuck is simply a proper nod to the plane. (And there is a great ASL story by Manny Hernandez about a fighter plane). The Double Fuck, when fired up, feels close range, right in your face. But, what this really is about: we need serious regulations on guns. The monumental fuck, is what it is. Truth. Washington DC can make one feel fucked, or monumental. DC is transient for many, yet permanent for others. This is a reflection of my love-and-hate relationship with DC.
Know Your Fucks is an ongoing art series, each emphasizing a play on language: visually, literally and metaphorically.
