Robert Malherbe was born in Mauritius and settled in Australia in 1971. He gained practical experience working in an animation studio, drawing from life. He was largely self-taught, taking observations from art world galleries. He exhibited in London in the early 1990s and has been a regular solo exhibitor in Australia since 2003.
Malherbe has been a regular finalist in the Wynne and Archibald prizes, and has won numerous regional art prizes. His style is characterised by strong, confident, gestural strokes, but the overall effect is quiet and intimate, with controlled, disciplined marks barely concealing the innate energy of the artist.
These two small works are typical of Malherbe’s oeuvre, delightful colouring and gentle pastoral scenes, disguising the swift, broad strokes with which they were executed.
