Inventory Number: EVAN30.2022-03 ANDREA MANTEGNA, Italian (1431 - 1506) “Mantegna provided a Classical model for Albrecht Dürer. In ‘Andrea Mantegna Engraves Julius Caesar’, I mimic Mantegna’s style of shading with parallel lines. Mantegna is shown engraving a scene from his work ‘Triumph of Julius Caesar’.” Evan Lindquist 2016 Born around 1431 in Northern Italy, Andrea Mantegna was an Italian Renaissance artist most famous for his use of foreshortening and other perspective techniques in engravings, paintings, and frescoes. Known for the linear sharpness and rigorous attention to detail, Mantegna also stands out among Italian Renaissance painters for his dedication to classical antiquity. Mantegna's work was an inspiration for many Italian Renaissance artists to follow him, including Leonardo di Vinci. Between the late 15th century, Mantegna painted ‘The Triumphs of Caesar’ (1485-1495), a series of nine egg tempera paintings for the Gonzaga Ducal Palace in Mantua, to celebrate the ancient Roman soldier, statesman and historian, Julius Caesar (c.102-44 BC). Mantegna spent much of his life in the service of three generations of Gonzaga patrons in Mantua. When he died there in 1506, he was one of the most highly thought of artists of the Renaissance. Mantegna's influence was wide, but nowhere more so than in the field of engraving. Mantegna oversaw a workshop of engravers that raised the stature of engraving to a high standard in the early years of the Italian Renaissance. Inventory Number: EVAN30.2022-16 AEGIDIUS SADELER, Flemish (1570 – 1629) Aka Gillis Sadeler; Egidius Sadeler; Ægedius Sadeler, a Flemish painter and a leading Northern mannerist engraver, was born around 1570, the son of Aegidius Sadeler I, in Antwerp, Belgium. The Sadelers, descendants of "chasers," engravers of armor, represented a dynasty of Flemish engravers dominant in Northern European printmaking in the later 16th and 17th centuries. Ageidiues II was greatest engraver of the Sadeler family. Thus, he is often referred to simply as Aegidius Sadeler, rather than as Aegidius Sadeler II. In 1957, Aegidius Sadler moved to Prague in 1597, where he was employed by the court of Rudolph II (1552-1612) Holy Roman Emperor (1576–1612). Noted as part of Rudolf II’s legacy is his strong influence as a patron of Northern Mannerist art. Sadeler died in Prague in 1629. Landscapes executed at the time of Aegidius Sadeler were a rich amalgam of symbolic meanings. Much like many of Evan Lindquist’s Engravings of Engravers, there are stories to be supposed and interpreted within the picture. If you view “February” from Sadeler’s series “Twelve Months”, you might even see a similarity in the far away cityscape, to what is depicted here. Inventory Number: EVAN30.2022-18 CLAUDE MELLAN, French (1598 - 1688) “In 1649, Claude Mellan engraved his extremely famous “Veil of Saint Veronica”. He used only one single spiral line — beginning at the tip of Jesus’ nose — spiraling outward. Fourteen years earlier, Mellan had engraved his own self-portrait, but he had used the old traditional cross-hatch method for shading. “What if Mellan had tried engraving his own self-portrait with some of that spiral line shading he would invent 14 years later to shade the face of Jesus? “This… shows my own attempt at spiral-line shading on the face of Claude Mellan. (Every year on my birthday, I remember to wish Claude Mellan a Happy Birthday.)” - Evan Lindquist 2008 Born May 23, 1598, Claude Mellan became one of the most notable engravers in 17th century France. One of his greatest achievements was his 1649 engraving, “The Sudarium of Saint Veronica”, also known as “The Veil of Christ”. Mellan had perfected a unique technique of engraving wherein, rather than creating shade and form using cross hatching, he used parallel lines. Inventory Number: EVAN30.2022-26 ARMIN LANDECK, American (1905 - 1984) Born in 1905 in Wisconsin, Armin Landeck received his Bachelor of Architecture from Columbia University in 1927. That same year, Landeck pulled his first print from his recently acquired secondhand press. Also in 1927, he married. After traveling Europe on his honeymoon, he and his bride returned to New York. Unable to find a job as an architect, they moved to Connecticut. Landeck committed the rest of his life to printmaking. In 1931 he accepted a teaching position at Brearly, a private school in New York City. He taught at Brearly until 1958. Much of Landeck’s imagery consisted of lonely scenes of New York buildings and rooftops. In Landeck’s 1935 drypoint, “Studio Interior No. 1’, he conveys the interior of his first studio in Cornwall, Connecticut. In the 40’s, Landeck met Stanley William Hayter. At Hayter’s Atelier 17, Landeck learned to use the burin, and printed his first engraving. Here in Lindquist’s interpretation of “Landeck Sharpening a Burin”, it would seem Lindquist reimagines Landeck in his Cornwall studio, practicing sharpening a burin, as Hayter might have taught him. Armin Landeck died at his farm in Litchfield, Connecticut in December of 1984.
