Old, reclaimed wood is incredibly beautiful, but the inner beauty needs to be discovered and revealed. It's a transformative process. The outside is usually gray and you cannot tell what the interior looks like. Removing the first layer reveals a bit, but not all. When starting to carve, you discover more and more characteristics - grain lines, colors, imperfections -, each layer of wood showing its own unique qualities. During this process I "play" with the grain lines, wood colors, knots, cracks and other imperfections that come up, but the full beauty is often not yet revealed. The "real magic" happens at the very end, when I apply linseed oil. Only then, the true colors of the wood emerge, the lamination lines turn dark and the grain lines get amplified. A truly transformative process!
