"Parable of the Sower" sets Jesus' parable from Luke 8:5-8 in a real place: a poppy garden McClung discovered off Montevallo Road in Birmingham, where she stopped one afternoon after spotting a field of color and found beds of red, orange, and paperwhite poppies tended by a young gardener named David Pyler. Working in bright pinks, purples, and greens, she renders the garden with its tree, fence, and flowering beds, and letters lines from the parable across the top and bottom of the sheet. The handwritten verses tie the painted ground to the scripture's account of seed falling on the path, the rocks, the thorns, and good soil. The piece grew out of hours she spent drawing over the fence and talking with David about art, gardening, and life—time she remembered as some of her most enjoyable painting.
