'Blossom' the possum is a little girl I met at Kanyana Wildlife. Her real name is 'Uandi', meaning beautiful, though she’s lovingly known as Blossom too. She arrived at Kanyana in 2021 after being confiscated, along with six other possums, by the DBCA due to unsuitable enclosure conditions. Because she had become too friendly to safely return to the wild, Blossom now lives permanently at Kanyana, where she is cared for and adored.

Her painting is inspired by her name and her gentle nature, as she “blossoms” from loose abstraction into refined realism. Painted in watercolour and created entirely live at events, the artwork allowed the public to witness her emerging form layer by layer.

Brushtail possums are one of Australia’s more familiar native marsupials, yet they face many challenges in the wild, from habitat loss to human conflict. Through this painting, we celebrate 'Blossom' and the incredible care Kanyana provides to animals like her.

Prints of 'Blossom' are coming in the new year, allowing you to bring a part of her into your home while supporting the vital work that Kanyana do for wildlife.

This painting was created using both watercolour paint and pencils, utilising a unique layering process that combines the best of both mediums.
The paper is 300g Cold press watercolour paper.

As with any original artwork, care should be taken in choosing where to display to keep it looking its best.
High quality, archival materials have been used in all stages.
