Flag abstracts the emblem of civic, political, and territorial identity into a pure study of proportion, staggered cadence, and chromatic contrast. Recontextualising the familiar geometry of striped banners, the work strips away graphic symbols and national allegiance, reducing heraldry to its core physical components: stacked, horizontal colour planes.
Composed of high-gloss polyurethane-painted PVC bars, the sculpture disrupts the traditional rectangular boundary of a flag through asymmetric, staggered lengths that extend outward across the wall. The varied horizontal bars—ranging from bright yellow and deep green to cyan, off-white, black, and vibrant magenta—echo the industrial colour logic of Donald Judd while invoking the hard-edge spatial division of John McCracken. By unanchoring the stripes and varying their physical projection, Flag transforms a symbol of fixed identity into a dynamic, open-ended spatial intervention.
