This spring I had the good fortune to have a caterpillar change into a butterfly right under the outside ledge of my studio window. Though I didn't see it emerge in real time, it was an unusual and special thing that I view as a positive sign both personally and in general. This painting references an abandoned shed in a state park near me that's slowly being reclaimed by nature, with a chrysalis signifying the letting go of old structures that no longer serve, while something new and more suitable for the time is growing. Click through the slideshow and zoom into the photos I took under the ledge - the structure of the chrysalis is just amazingly intelligent, beautiful and magical.
