In this multimedia painting, I immersed myself in the beauty and atmosphere of the Western Australian bush, with four paperbark trees anchoring a scene alive with texture and light. Natural pigments, including red oxide and charcoal dust, were mixed with water and allowed to pool and flow across the paper, creating organic marks that echo the papery, weathered surfaces of the trees, before being layered with gouache, ink, charcoal and earth-toned pencils. I wanted to capture not only the distinctive character of the landscape, but the feeling of being beneath the paperbarks in the dappled light, savouring the warmth, the sounds of insects and waterbirds, and the serenity of the lake. This work is an invitation to bring a little of that wild, atmospheric beauty into your own space and spend time discovering its many textures and details.
