The Common Eland, also known as the southern eland or eland antelope, is a large-sized savannah and plains antelope found in East and Southern Africa. An adult male is around 1.6 m tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 942 kg with a typical range of 500–600 kg, 340–445 kg for females.
When I saw this Eland skull from one of my suppliers on Etsy, I knew I had to have it. The skull and the horns are just magnificent! I created my design around some large arrowheads I found at Clear Creek Trading in Sedona and then used the Czech glass seed beads in various patterns throughout. The main arrowhead is surround by Golden Calcite chips. Usually, I wrap the base of the horns with a woven rope or trim, but this one I wanted to allow viewers to see the manner in which the corkscrew pattern of the horns was continued in the base of the skull. It amazed me how it line up just perfectly when I put the horns back on.
