“The Uplands of Thanet” and Sarre–Reculver Landscape Illustrations
Framed pair of monochrome topographical illustrations relating to the Isle of Thanet and the north Kent coast.
An interesting framed display comprising two early 20th century printed landscape illustrations depicting scenes from the Isle of Thanet and surrounding Kent countryside. The upper image, titled “A Sea of Succulent Pasture – Land between Sarre and Reculvers”, shows a traditional windmill overlooking the flat marsh landscape associated with the ancient Wantsum Channel, once an important historic shipping route separating Thanet from mainland Kent.
The lower illustration, titled “In the Uplands of Thanet: Camping out above Birchington”, depicts figures gathered beside tents on elevated coastal ground, capturing the leisurely spirit of early seaside tourism and rural recreation.
Executed in a restrained monochrome illustrative style with strong atmospheric qualities, the prints possess both local historical interest and decorative charm, particularly for collectors of Kent, Thanet or coastal topographical material. Presented in a gilt frame.

My father gave me this for Christmas a few years ago. It's quite fascinating to remember that the Isle of Thanet (where you are now) was an island in years gone by separated by the Wantsum Channel. Who knows with 'global warming' it might be again!
