This was also a bedroom when it was a private house. We ripped all the old fittings out and rewired and replumbed. The only thing to survive was the bifold door which fronts a small hanging area for clothes.

I was thrilled to find this pretty brass bed which I bought on eBay on July 3rd 2013 for £370. Don't you just love the 'Mother of Pearl'? I couldn't wait until the room was decorated and had to see what it looked like erected and in situ. I could then plan around it.

The Queen Anne chest of drawers with the inlay of Neptune on a Scallop Shell c1702 came next. It's magnificent. Bought for £429 on July 9th 2013. It could be too large for the room and in 'hotel world' you could be right?

I love small bookcases. They are so handy for small and limited spaces especially when they are narrow. All the rooms in the hotel have a selection of books. I think this gives the bedroom more of a homely feel and distinguishes it from a corporate environment. Reading is so pleasurable. I encourage you to do what Churchill suggests with books:

“If you cannot read all your books, at any rate handle, or as it were, fondle them – peer into them, let them fall open where they will, read from the first sentence that arrests the eye, set them back on the shelves with your own hands, arrange them on your own plan so that if you do not know what is in them, you at least know where they are. Let them be your friends; let them at any rate be your acquaintances. If they cannot enter the circle of your life, do not deny them at least a nod of recognition.”

Brown carpet..hmmmm you might say, but just like brown floorboards, the colour goes with everything and is very versatile with design and style of any period.

Sockets! So difficult to always get them in the exact place you want. Unless you're building an hotel with designers and architects where all layouts are formalised and all furniture is contracted in advance, then you're really having to try and estimate where the sockets are to go, as you DIY your own design. You have to second guess what tables, lamps and other furniture might fit in the space and hopefully position something that works. All within a very restricted budget and time frame. And that includes getting your electrician to be on site when you want him! But I think in this room we have got it mostly right.

The wall colour is a Flat Matt 'Pea' Green from the Dulux Heritage range. Green so brings in the outside.
