[EN]In "Afternoon Sun / Nắng chiều" (2023), Tôn Thất Minh Nhật captures the warmth and fading radiance of late afternoon through the layered depths of sơn ta, or Vietnamese lacquer. A glowing core of amber and gold emerges from concentric fields of burnt orange, deep red, and brown, evoking sunlight gradually dissolving into shadow. The finely striated surface and richly textured edges reveal the material’s capacity to hold and transform light, the result of a meticulous process of layering, curing, sanding, and polishing. Both painterly and sculptural, the work invites quiet contemplation of time’s passage, where light becomes matter and the fleeting intensity of a moment is preserved within the depths of lacquer.
