[EN] As the only work in the series realised in Seoul, Phan Quang was unable to access narratives similar to those encountered in Vietnam, where memory sometimes persists through relationships that began in affection. Here, the traces led instead to a different history, in which most of the women connected to Japanese soldiers were “comfort women”, a system of sexual enslavement. These women refused to share their lives with a foreign male photographer, a stranger to their experience. From this limit, the work shifts. In place of a dialogue that cannot take place, the artist adopts a minimal gesture: placing a wreath beside, and draping a white veil over, the statue of a young Korean girl in front of the Japanese Consulate in Seoul, as an act of remembrance.
