Re/cover no.1 (Hanoi, Vietnam), 2014

[EN] The man depicted in this photograph is Câu, the son of Mrs. Nguyễn Thị Thu (Re/cover no. 5), who holds a singular place within this project. Having become a close friend, he also played an essential role as an intermediary, helping the artist locate and connect with many families throughout the research process. His personal history is deeply intertwined with the archives and documentary films presented, notably through the deeply moving handwritten letters he addressed to his father in Japan.

A particularly touching story also connects them. When he learned that the artist would be traveling to Japan, he did not ask for anything of material value. Instead, he made a simple and sincere request: that the artist bring back a handful of soil from his father’s hometown. He wished to place this soil on his ancestral altar in order to honor his paternal lineage and to establish a spiritual connection with those he had never known. His testimony, memories, and reflections are explored in detail in the project’s documentary film.

[FR] L’homme figurant sur cette photographie est Câu, le fils de Mme Nguyễn Thị Thu (Re/cover n° 5), qui occupe une place singulière dans ce projet. Devenu un ami proche, il a également joué un rôle d’intermédiaire essentiel, aidant l’artiste à localiser et à entrer en contact avec de nombreuses familles au fil de ses recherches. Son histoire personnelle est profondément liée aux archives et aux films documentaires présentés, notamment à travers les lettres manuscrites, d’une grande intensité, qu’il a adressées à son père au Japon.

Une histoire particulièrement touchante les relie également. Lorsqu’il a appris que l’artiste se rendait au Japon, il ne lui a pas demandé un objet de valeur, mais a formulé une requête simple et sincère : rapporter une poignée de terre de la ville natale de son père. Il souhaitait la déposer sur l’autel de ses ancêtres afin d’honorer sa lignée paternelle et d’établir un lien spirituel avec ceux qu’il n’a jamais connus. Son témoignage, ses souvenirs et ses réflexions sont développés en détail dans le film documentaire du projet.

[VI] Người đàn ông trong bức ảnh này là ông Câu, con trai bà Nguyễn Thị Thu (Re/cover số 5), một nhân vật đặc biệt thân thiết và là cầu nối quan trọng giúp nghệ sĩ tìm kiếm, tiếp cận các gia đình khác trong suốt dự án. Câu chuyện của ông gắn liền với các tư liệu và phim tài liệu, bao gồm những bức thư tay đầy xúc động ông gửi cho cha mình ở Nhật Bản.

Giữa Phan Quang và ông có một câu chuyện rất cảm động: Khi biết nghệ sĩ có chuyến đi sang Nhật, ông không mong cầu gì cao sang, chỉ tha thiết xin một nắm đất từ quê cha mang về. Ông muốn bỏ nắm đất ấy vào bát hương để thờ cúng và kết nối tâm linh với tổ tiên bên nội. Câu chuyện phỏng vấn và lời tự sự của ông được khắc họa rất rõ nét trong bộ phim tư liệu của dự án.
