[EN]In "Moonlight / Ánh trăng #02" (2023), Tôn Thất Minh Nhật explores the interplay of light, shadow, and material through the layered depths of sơn ta, or Vietnamese lacquer, a traditional medium made from the sap of the rhus succedanea tree. Built through successive layers of application, curing, sanding, and polishing, the lacquer reveals a remarkable depth and luminosity. A luminous blue frame encloses a dark, horizontally striated surface, where silvery reflections emerge like moonlight shimmering across still water. The richly textured, engraved wooden border evokes the architectural language of Huế’s royal temples, contrasting with the subtle luminosity of the lacquer within. Balancing painterly sensitivity with sculptural presence, Minh Nhật transforms the surface into a space of quiet contemplation, where light appears and recedes, and stillness holds the traces of time.
