One of the sad facts of plein air painting, especially in Florida is that many of the scenes painted by artists will soon disappear from the landscape. This painting by Rob Reedy is a case in point. The moss-covered oak in the image was located on one of the largest and most pristine tracts of undeveloped land remaining in Seminole County’s urban core. This property, owned by the Catholic Church, was sold to a developer who destroyed the natural environment to build hundreds of homes. The original woods and pastureland once filled with eagles, hawks, large oaks and other native Florida flora and fauna is now gone along with this moss-covered oak. Plein air artists are not just painting, they are also recording much of Florida’s landscape before it disappears.
