Escapism was created after my transition from full-time in Denver to a Denver/Houston split. The top section represents Denver, where I had grown to feel connected and close. The bottom represents Houston, where I felt more distanced from the place and those around me. Resembling an hourglass, this diptych notes that my relationships to these places and to people shift over time. It explores one’s desire to escape the feeling of separateness and serves as a reminder to embrace that feeling, because it will not always be there. The work explores the notion of time in relation to space and to others. When we're closely connected to others, plugged in, time moves quickly. When we're not connected, distant in our relationships, time moves more slowly.
