Michael Caines
Sphinx
Oil on canvas
“This painting is the first painting in this series, and developed by a happy accident while I was taking care of a friend's Pomeranian. At night, the dog would lie like a little prince on the bed, his back legs poking out behind him. I had been searching for a sly, provocative way to speak to our political times, and something about his pose offered a glimpse of the absurdity I was after. I painted him on a French Rococo-style sofa from a furniture magazine against a backdrop of a cropped Fragonard painting. The title refers to his regal pose.”
