The imagery of the mid-20th century is some of the most iconic and memorable visual representations in history. I seek to draw the viewer in with playfully marrying the smiling idealized people from vintage advertisements with whimsical surrealism. Color plays a crucial role in my pieces, as I often start with a color story and build from that. Lately a personal goal I have made for myself has been to push pieces further and manipulate the material more than I normally would. I find when I do so, I produce more visually dynamic and successful pieces. While some of the combinations in my pieces are bizarre for the fun of it, I often explore more heavy subject matter like social issues and stigmas, mental health, gender stereotypes, sexuality and feminism, parenthood and grief. I enjoy eliciting a response in the viewer with eye-catching, outlandish imagery; whether it be a smile or a laugh, or getting one to think and introspect. I find people connect with my work when they find a relatable aspect within it, so I often aim to just let a concept develop organically rather than force it. I also enjoy when the viewer is able to extract their own personal narrative from the combination of imagery I present. Additionally, I find enthusiasm is invoked in people who were growing up in the eras of the imagery I use, when they recognize a product or an advertisement they remember. I incorporate nostalgia into my work, whether it is first-hand for older generations, or nostalgia for a time we haven't experienced; a visual and conceptual time travel perhaps. I am very inspired by the mid-20th century and images it produced; as I collect more material, I am more eager to get into my studio and create. I love giving the materials a 'second life' when they have been stored away and seemingly forgotten for so long. While the recognition and positive response from viewers is gratifying, ultimately I create because I feel it is what I was put on earth to do, and my passion to create is so strong I don't dare ignore it!
