Deeply inspired by surrealism, Manser’s practice connects with the legacy of artists like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo, whose exploration of altered consciousness and mystical imagery resonates with her own experiences of heightened awareness from a young age. Like these artists, she employs techniques such as glazing and layering, building depth and a sense of luminosity in her work.
Central to her process is automatism, a technique pioneered by the Surrealists as a means of accessing the unconscious. Through automatic drawing, she allows imagery to emerge freely, bypassing rational control. This method enables her to access the unconscious, creating compositions that feel both deeply personal and universal. Then she transfers them onto the canvas painting each element to construct dreamlike worlds. Her artistic journey is driven by research, where the act of creating informs her investigation, revealing profound insights and continuously enriching her practice.
Mahya Shamai: I’m a California-based artist with over fifteen years of experience in drawing and painting. My background in fine art has given me a strong foundation in technique, but what drives me most is a deep love for bringing beauty into people’s lives. In my bright Laguna Beach studio, I find inspiration in the light, harmony, and rhythm of the coast. My soft, quiet nature as a person gives me a keen ability to listen and identify what a client needs, which I then use to channel the intended mood of a piece.
My work ranges from neutral, abstract paintings to more contemplative, realistic compositions—each one crafted with care and intention. I especially love collaborating on custom projects! By working closely with clients and understanding their unique vision, I find joy in tailoring each piece to elevate the mood and character of a space, enhancing everyday life with the presence of truly human artwork.
In my downtime, you can find me in a garden or a museum somewhere, with my nose in a flower or a painting. I am also often found daydreaming, not at the amateur, but at the professional level.
