"I was playful with my camera, whirling and twirling as I moved through the forest, capturing wispy layers of imagery. I am truly enamored with intentional camera movement. The results are ethereal, as slow shutter speed blurs the subject matter and elaborates upon natural color. When I browse the hundreds of photographs taken in a single afternoon, some produce a visceral response within me. My litmus test has become an audible gasp. If I gasp out loud, then I know I must develop a photograph into an artwork.

‘Moonbathing at Dusk’ is part of my series 'Conversations with Abstraction.’ I was drawn to its inherent luminosity and imagined it enhanced with beeswax. The moon is whole, no matter its phase, always captivating in its celestial beauty."

About the artist

Erin Keane

Erin Keane is an artist working with photography, encaustic beeswax, and bookbinding. In photography, she explores the elasticity of light, and creates luminous paintings with photographic brushstrokes and layers of encaustic. In bookbinding, she explores innovative bindings and stitches, and designs encaustic book sculptures and journals to honor books as an art form. Keane lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina, and works daily at her cozy home studio near Pisgah National Forest. She spends her leisure time hiking, canoeing, camping, creek stomping, sunset chasing, bonfire chilling, and star gazing. Her adventures in the mountains, lakes, and rivers become embedded personally into her imagery.
