“This piece is a symbol for peace and a statement about the current war in Ukraine and the fight for freedom.”

About the artist
Shandra Stephenson
I am a paper collage artist from Canada and I use my work to focus on world events issues. Growing up, I have always had a dark sense of humour and I like to include this in my work as a subtle satire, a sort of “laugh so you don’t cry” approach. I want people to feel both discomfort and also a sense of ease at the same time. I use images that I hand-source through local thrift and book shops. I like to take things from the past that would be thrown out or possibly just forgotten about and incorporate them with modern images, creating a familiar yet juxtaposed contradictions. My background in photography and painting allows me to bring colour and light into my work and build interesting and layered compositions.
