“[This] visual poem and cityscape [was] inspired by the Bop poetic form created by Afaa Michael Weaver…The onomatopoeia of comic books that sparked my creativity at a young age is also a nod to my work as a poet, and the text-based art of graffiti that was a significant part of my nurture in hip-hop culture. It’s an aesthetic that speaks to the necessity of not only acknowledging history, but appreciating what we find in its truths."

Poet and visual artist Mitchell L. H. Douglas is the author of dying in the scarecrow’s arms, \blak\ \al-fə bet\, winner of the Persea Books Lexi Rudnitsky/Editor's Choice Award, and Cooling Board: A Long-Playing Poem, an NAACP Image Award and Hurston/Wright Legacy Award nominee. He is a 2021 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellow, a cofounder of the Affrilachian Poets, and Associate Professor of English at Indiana University University Indianapolis. His visual art has been published in The Adroit Journal and The Offing.
