“The 'Bleeding' series is an ongoing record of the end years of my fertility, a difficult reckoning for me, one moving through a range of despair, sadness, and anger. Started in 2015. I first arranged endometrial lining shed during menstruation onto paper. The process changed with my adoption of the cup. Now I pour the collected menstrual blood onto paper.”

About the artist

Leticia Velasquez

Leticia Velasquez is a California native, daughter of Mexican immigrants. She left for NYC to study photography at Parsons School of Design. After 11 years, she returned to her home state. She lives in Los Angeles and works as a substitute teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Her artwork delves deeply into the specificity of her rich intersectional experience as a first-generation Mexican-American navigating a modern world in many ways unlike that of her forebears and emerges with work - no matter the medium and how subjective - lucid with moments of universality.
