About the artist
Shani Strand
Shani Strand is a Los Angeles-based, multidisciplinary artist. Strand explores themes such as colonialism and myth-making through dynamic installation projects, which have recently been exhibited in “Extra Terrestrial” (Rachel Uffner, 2021); “A Gathering” (HOUSING, 2021); and “100% Salt” (HOUSING, 2020). She has lectured at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and was the graduate student speaker at her commencement from UCLA MFA in 2023. Upcoming shows include a solo exhibition at Deli Gallery.
Strand uses local vernaculars and globalized language to perform an exploration of aesthetics that appears across cultures, particularly out of post/neo-colonial conditions of Jamaica and its diaspora: the mythologies of Babylon and Armageddon. She considers what is visible - decor, landscape, architecture as metonyms for what is invisible – ghost and history.
