Throughout my career, my work has explored abstraction. While the core of my work is painting and drawing, I have recently begun to include large-scale installation, sculptural objects, video, sound, and animation.
My work has been presented in over 100 gallery exhibitions, both nationally and internationally in Paris, Houston, Los Angeles, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. I have participated in numerous institutional exhibitions, including MoMA PS1, The New Museum, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Wellin Museum of Art, The Wexner Museum, the National Gallery in Washington D.C., and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Several of my drawings have been purchased as part of the Contemporary Drawing Collection at the Museum of Modern Art, and my work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and The Weatherspoon Museum of Art, Greensboro, NC.
I have held visiting artist positions at Cornell University, SUNY Purchase, and the City University of New York at Lehman College, where I am now an Associate Professor of Art. I have lectured in over forty institutions, including the Maryland Institute of Contemporary Art, Rhode Island School of Design, The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, Ontario School of Art and Design, CCA San Francisco, Brandeis University, Princeton University, Rice University, the University of Houston, and others.
I am the recipient of several residencies and grants including The Yaddo Foundation, The Triangle Foundation Residency and Workshop, the Elizabeth Foundation Residency, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Studio Residency at Governor’s Island, Smack Mellon Studios and Artist Stipend, Banff Centre for the Arts Residency, Artist Residency in Banff, Canada, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Lower East Side Print Fellowship Edition Award, National Studio Program Residency, P.S.1/MOMA Affiliate, Clocktower, New York Residency, ART OMI Residency, Henry Street Settlement Studio Fellowship, The Marie Walsh Sharpe Studio Fellowship, The Millay Colony for the Arts Residency, and The Ragdale Foundation Residency Program, Lake Forest, IL.
Since first entering the COVID-19 lockdown, I created The Pandemic Salon. Started in early quarantine, the Salon brings together artists, writers, and thinkers to discuss topics in an online environment. The 12 Salons have connected an audience of 600 participants from 40 countries. Discussions begin through presentations grounded in disciplines including philosophy, classical music, poetry, science, and art. The project’s cross-disciplinary openness fosters a sense of community, dismantling hierarchical structures found in traditional forms of institutional showcasing.
Also during quarantine I co-founded Hilma’s Ghost, a feminist artist collective that addresses existing gaps in abstraction. Inspired by Hilma af Klint's resurgence, the collective recovers esoteric thought through collaborative art making, rigorous study, and ritual practice. We have hosted 3 virtual programs and are creating a database of women artists working in spirituality and abstraction.
