This series of monotypes was made during a two-week residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in 2025, in a quiet, rural studio in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. My studio there had a skylight, so I could watch the weather and light shift throughout the day. Working with water-based printmaking inks and acrylics on cream, professional-grade printmaking paper, I responded to what I saw and felt as the days changed. A snowstorm arrived partway through my stay, and the four prints that followed trace that arc: Before the Storm, Winter Storm, Winter, and Winter Dusk, together forming the Appalachian Air series. Rather than depict the snowfall literally, I wanted these prints to hold the freshness and quiet magic of being on a mountain as light and weather moved through it, at every hour of the day.
