Licensed by Creative Commons (CC BY-SA). ★ UNITED STATES ARMY ★ THE KOREAN WAR BEGAN WITH A SURPRISE ATTACK JUNE 25, 1950, WHEN EIGHT DIVISIONS AND AN ARMORED BRIGADE (90,000) OF THE NORTH KOREAN PEOPLE’S ARMY (NKPA) ATTACKED ACROSS THE 38TH PARALLEL AND OVERWHELMED THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA ARMY (ROKA). SPEARHEADED BY TANKS, NKPA FORCES CAPTURED SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA’S CAPITAL. THE ROKA FLED SOUTH TO PUSAN. THE UN CALLED FOR A CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES AND A WITHDRAWL OF THE NKPA TO THE 38TH PARALLEL. PRESIDENT HARRY S. TRUMAN ORDERED GENERAL MACARTHUR TO USE ALL HIS AVAILABLE FORCES TO REPEL THE INVASION. THE US FORMED A UNITED NATIONS COMMAND (UNC) INTEGRATING US AND ALLIED FORCES UNDER MACARTHUR’S COMMAND. MACARTHUR ASSIGNED COMMAND OF GROUND FORCES TO THE EIGHTH US ARMY (EUSA) UNDER GEN. WALKER. HE ALSO ASSUMED COMMAND OF THE ROK ARMY. WALKER ORDERED A STAND ALONG A 140-MILE LINE KNOWN AS THE "PUSAN PERIMETER". THE 7TH INFANTRY DIVISION AND THE 1ST MARINE DIVISION MADE A BOLD AMPHIBIOUS LANDING ON INCHON IN THE NORTH TO ENVELOP THE NKPA. ON SEPT. 29TH, AFTER ARDUOUS STREET-TO-STREET COMBAT, SEOUL WAS RETURNED TO PRESIDENT RHEE. ON SEPT. 27 MACARTHUR ORDERED TROOPS NORTH OF THE 38TH PARALLEL. UNC FORCES MET HEAVY RESISTANCE FROM COMMUNIST CHINESE FORCES (CCF) WHO SIDED WITH THE NKPA. THE 1ST CAVALRY DIVISION, 8TH CAVALRY REGIMENT FOUGHT FIERCE BATTLES WITH THE CCF. NOW FACING MORE THAN 300,000 CCF, US TROOPS WERE ORDERED TO WITHDRAW TO ESCAPE ENVELOPMENT. UNRELENTING CCF PRESURE, WHICH OFTEN INCLUDED SURPRISE NIGHTTIME ASSAULTS AND HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT IN HARSH WEATHER, MADE THE RETREAT COSTLY. THE CCF SURROUNDED AND PUNISHED THE 2ND DIVISION AS IT FOUGHT TO ESCAPE. SEOUL FELL IN JAN 1951. GEN. WALKER DIED AND GEN. RIDGEWAY REPLACED HIM. THEN, TRUMAN REPLACED MACARTHUR WITH RIDGEWAY AS UNC COMMANDER. RIDGEWAY'S STRATEGY WAS TO ADVANCE SLOWLY AND METHODICALLY CLEAR THE ENEMY FROM SO. KOREA. EUSA LIBERATED SEOUL IN MID-MARCH. THE ENEMY MADE A SPRING OFFENSIVE ON SEOUL. I CORPS CONTAINED THEM AND EUSA HALTED THEIR ATTACK AND GAINED A STRONG DEFENSIVE STAND. THIS PERSUADED THE SOVIET UNION'S UN DELEGATE TO PROPOSE A CEASE-FIRE ON JUNE 23, 1951.

Licensed by Creative Commons (CC BY-SA). ★ UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ★ WHEN NORTH KOREA INVADED SOUTH KOREA ON JUNE 25, 1950, THE US AIR FORCE WAS LESS THAN THREE YEARS OLD. THE KOREAN WAR WAS ITS FIRST CONFLICT. THE FAR EAST AIR FORCE (FEAF), OCCUPYING JAPAN, WAS MADE UP OF THE 5TH, 13TH AND 20TH GROUPS. THE 5TH AIR FORCE GROUP WOULD BEAR THE BRUNT OF THE KOREAN FIGHTING. THE FIRST USAF PLANE DESTROYED IN THE WAR WAS A DISABLED C-54 TRANSPORT. SOME 1,465 ADDITIONAL USAF PLANES WOULD BE LOST, ONLY 10% OF THOSE IN AIR-TO-AIR COMBAT. THE FEAF'S INITIAL ACTIONS WERE DEFENSIVE, PROTECTING TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT AND SHIPS CARRYING CIVILIANS EVACUATING KOREA. ON JUNE 27TH WHILE ON A COVER MISSION, AN F-82 TWIN MUSTANG INTERCEPTOR SHOT DOWN THREE YAK FIGHTERS. HOURS LATER FOUR MORE ENEMY PLANES FELL TO F-80 FIGHTERS. THESE SEVEN WERE THE FIRST OF MORE THAN 975 ENEMY AIRCRAFT DOWNED BY FEAF PLANES IN AERIAL COMBAT. DURING THE LAST TWO YEARS OF THE WAR, GROUND FIGHTING WAS HEAVY AND BLOODY. THE FEAF BOMBED BRIDGES, WAREHOUSES AND RAILROADS. THIS SHOW OF MASSIVE AIR POWER PRESSURED THE CHINESE INTO ACCEPTING AN ARMISTICE AND WAS A KEY FACTOR IN FINALLY ENDING THE WAR. A STATISTICAL SUMMARY REVEALS THE MAGNITUDE AND FEROCITY OF THE KOREAN AIR WAR. THE FEAF CREW FROM A FORCE OF 33,625 PERSONNEL IN JUNE 1950 TO NEARLY 112,200 OFFICERS AND AIRMEN IN JULY 1953. DURING THE WAR, FEAF UNITS FLEW 720,908 SORTIES AND DELIVERED 476,000 TONS OF ORDNANCE. VICTORY CAME AT GREAT COST. 1,841 MEN WERE KILLED, WOUNDED OR DECLARED MISSING AND 750 AIRCRAFT WERE DESTROYED. MANY OF THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED IN THE FEAF DEFENDED FREEDOM WITH THEIR LIVES. ALL WHO SERVED DESERVE THIS NATION'S GRATITUDE. THEY KNOW FIRSTHAND THAT "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE."

Licensed by Creative Commons (CC BY-SA). ★ UNITED STATES COAST GUARD ★ The US Coast Guard's presence in Korea began soon after the end of World War II. A Coast Guard detachment assisted in the development and training of the Korean Coast Guard, which eventually became the Republic of Korea Navy. Once hostilities broke out between North Korea and South Korea, the South Korean Navy assisted the United States Navy in fighting a winning battle against the North. The Coast Guard played an active role in supporting the United Nations (UN) efforts throughout the conflict, carrying on the humanitarian tradition of the United States' oldest sea—coinc service. The Coast Guard also provided vital meteorological duties that supported the UN ground, naval, and air forces with weather information that greatly affected their military actions. Coast Guard cutters served as communication support platforms and as plane guards, ready to assist aircrews who were forced down at sea. They assisted troop and supply transports on their way to Korea. The Coast Guard supported the UN forces by manning and operating long-range aids to navigation stations (LORAN stations). Nine such stations provided direct navigation support to UN ships and aircraft engaged in the Korean War. One of these stations was based on the Korean Peninsula itself in the port city of Pusan. Two Coast Guard cutters serviced LORAN stations throughout the war. On the home front, Coast Guard expertise in port security and cargo handling, including the loading of ammunition and sabotage prevention, insured the uninterrupted flow of supplies to the UN forces serving in Korea. All of these missions served to support the UN's effort to preserve an independent and free South Korea. During the Korean War, the Coast Guard was always ready to serve with the other armed services of the United States to support the country's efforts anywhere in the world.

Truman ordered a naval blockade of the Korean coast in response to the invasion of South Korea. Gen. MacArthur recommended a Marine Corps regimental combat team be deployed to the Far East. On July 7th, the 1st Marine Brigade from Camp Pendleton, CA, was activated. Five days later, 6,500 Marines left San Diego for Pusan, Korea, coming ashore on August 2nd. General Oliver P. Smith, 1st Marine Division Commander, led the first major U.N. strike with a surprise amphibious assault at Inchon on Sept. 15th. In five days, the division closed on the approaches of Seoul. The South Korean capital fell to the Marines, wrested from its Communist captors by Sept. 27th. By early November, in bitterly cold weather, the 1st Marine Division was ordered northwest from Hunchan to the Chosin Reservoir. On Nov. 27th, eight divisions of the Chinese Army charged down the mountains to destroy the 1st Marine Division. Over the next month, the Marines and Chinese forces engaged in some of the fiercest fighting of the war. The Marines successfully completed a fighting withdrawal with an amphibious evacuation from Hungnam. The Marines suffered over 4,000 battle casualties and nearly 25,000 Chinese troops were killed. In 1951, the Marines faced battles against North Korean and Chinese soldiers. U.N. forces faced nearly 500,000 enemy soldiers. By mid-May, there were heavy enemy losses. The Marines then drove northward with the Army to the Hwacheon Reservoir. By June 20, 1951, the division took a ridgeline overlooking a deep circular valley nicknamed "the Punchbowl." Truce negotiations soon began. The quiet was shattered in March 1953 when the Chinese crossed U.N. front lines and hit the 1st Marine Division. The 5th Marines engaged in bitter fighting. Outpost "Reno" was lost, but the 5th Marines maintained control of outposts "Vegas" and "Carson." On July 27, 1953, the truce went into effect. Marine Corps casualties in the Korean War from August 1950 to July 1953 were 4,267 dead and 23,144 wounded. Marines were awarded 42 Medals of Honor.

The Memory of Sunny Lee Born during the Korean War in 1953, Sunny Lee loved her countries, both ancestral (South Korea) and adopted (the United States of America). To the very end, she was dedicated to highlighting the accomplishments of valiant soldiers from southern Utah who served to protect and defend her home country during "the Forgotten War," especially those from the 213th FA Battalion that fought in the battle often referred to as the "Miracle at Kapyong." Cedar City honors Sunny's tireless efforts in furthering the relationship with our Sister City, Gapyeong, South Korea. The Korean War Memorial and Gapyeong Monument Stone stand as a fortified testament to the deep appreciation that has developed between the two communities. Staying true to her name, Sunny embodied warm humility and honor, joy and gratitude, loyalty, and love.

Licensed by Creative Commons (CC BY-SA). ★ UNITED STATES NAVY ★ The primary role of the United States Navy at the outset of the Korean War was to help the UN Command avert a disaster in the Far East. During the first week of the war, the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge, heavy cruiser USS Rochester, eight destroyers, and three submarines were especially busy. The Navy's rapid show of force deterred the Chinese Communists from carrying out a long-planned amphibious assault which would have widened the conflict in the Far East. US Navy submarines and aircraft patrolled between the Soviet Union and the combat theater. The object of the Navy's combat operations was to maintain superiority at sea and in the Far East. As a result, China and the Soviet Union never used the sea or the air above it to support Communist forces on the Korean Peninsula. The fleet's presence and its quick move to Korean waters also helped MacArthur's command to slow down the enemy's 1950 ground offensive, hold a precarious beachhead on the peninsula, and build up forces ashore for a counteroffensive. In mid-September 1950, Vice Admiral Arthur Struble led an armada of 230 amphibious and other ships in a surprise assault on the port of Inchon. Enemy and Allied leaders alike had doubted that a major amphibious operation could be successful at Inchon, where the high tide ranged between 23 and 35 feet and two fortified islands blocked access. With bombardment by carrier planes and shelling by cruisers and destroyers, the Marines initiated an assault at 6:30 AM on Sept. 15th. By the early morning hours of Sept. 16th, their objectives had been secured. Sea control was especially important during the last two years of the war. It was a major factor in frustrating the Communist goals and persuading the enemy to sign the armistice agreement ending the Korean War on July 27, 1953. More than 265,000 Navy personnel served in Korea. A portion of the 720,000 other Americans who answered the call to duty, 465 Navy personnel were killed in action, and 1,576 were wounded in action during this first major conflict of the Cold War era.

Here is the transcription of the text from the plaque: MIRACLE AT KAP YONG On the night of May 26, 1951, near Sanchon–Jonc-Ni, So. Korea, Guardsmen from Southern Utah's 213th Field Artillery Battalion were assigned the mission to provide artillery support for the 21st Inf. Regiment, 24th ID. Patrols returned with word of a massive enemy force numbering in the thousands barely over the next hill. The grim order went out: "Nobody sleeps tonight!" Lt. Col. J. Frank Dalley of Summit, Utah, felt enormous responsibility for the safety of his men. The six hundred men were from the small Utah towns of Cedar City, Fillmore, Beaver, St. George, and Richfield. They were young men, except for a few officers. They were not hardened, experienced soldiers, but scholars and farmers. Gentle, honorable men who were also brothers, cousins, uncles, or neighbors—relatives or lifelong friends. Nevertheless, they were convinced they were fighting to make the world safe for their families, and if they did their job well, their sons might be spared from war in their turn. Four thousand Chinese soldiers, finding themselves surrounded by the infantry, made a desperate bid to break through the narrow valley where the two hundred and forty men of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and Battery A (units from Cedar City and Richfield) were located. The Chinese launched a vigorous attack. During the early morning hours, the fight for survival was ferocious. They fought hand-to-hand combat in the darkness. But miraculously, the two hundred and forty were able to hold their ground against the four thousand. At dawn, Captain Ray Cox led a combat patrol with just 18 men from the two batteries using a 105mm howitzer as a tank. Following his lead, the patrol hurtled down the valley, destroying numerous machine-gun nests and inflicting many enemy casualties. The remaining five guns provided an intense artillery barrage. The opposition finally withdrew after attempting to climb the steep surrounding slopes. This devastating fire convinced them escape was impossible, and they turned back in massive surrender. With the roar of the guns stilled, the artillerymen returned to count the cost. Hundreds of enemy soldiers lay limp and dead, but not one man from the 213th lost his life. Three hundred and fifty of the enemy lost their lives, and 830 were captured or surrendered. The units from Cedar City and Richfield were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their "unshakeable determination and gallantry" and "extraordinary heroism."
