The Between series (2006–10) is a meditation on intention and chance, order and chaos.
In each work, a rigid formal structure—stripes or a grid—is juxtaposed with loose, meandering lines of poured or spattered paint. The right-angled underpainting acts as an organizing framework, while the network of lines created by thrown string dipped in paint evokes something more free and open to serendipity.
These works are created through two distinct modes of painting. At first I limit myself to flat geometries, then I open my process up to exploration and discovery through action painting. The restrained palette of primary colors focuses attention on movement, rhythm, and time. Like much of my work, the Between series evokes the calendar grid and explores how time is structured, measured, and experienced.
