Mixed Signals
On a partly cloudy day, light doesn’t always behave the way we expect it to. Sunlight can bounce and scatter through the clouds, illuminating the landscape from what seems like several directions at once. In Mixed Signals, that shifting light became something I wanted to explore. Across the river, a beam of sunlight falls upon the distant field, creating what almost appears to be a pathway leading out of the water and toward the horizon. At the same time, light catches the upper branches of the trees, while below them deep, cool shadows stretch across the river and move toward the viewer.
There is a push and pull within that light that makes me wonder about what we think we are seeing. Is that illuminated path really an invitation forward, or simply a trick of the light? Are we being drawn toward something by the brightness in the distance while those dark reflections warn us to stay where we are? Mixed Signals lives in that uncertainty—the place between invitation and hesitation, light and shadow, what we see and what we believe to be true. Sometimes the landscape gives us directions that are every bit as complicated as the ones we encounter in life.
