Sphinx Mountain, el. 10,840 feet is a prominent mountain peak on the western face of the Madison Range in Madison County, Montana. The peak is located in the Beaverhead National Forest and Taylor Hilgard parcel of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness area. Its prominence and isolation makes it easy to distinguish from Ennis in the Madison River valley.
Sphinx Mountain-When Frank Tweedy and Edward Douglas surveyed the Three Forks quadrangle in 1886, they record this name. It resembles the Sphinx of Giza, Egypt, especially when viewed from across the Madison River to the southwest.
Settlers of the Madison valley called it “Old Red” because of the red rock cliffs that gleam in the sunset. The cap is formed of a unique conglomerate not found elsewhere in the Madison range but is like that found east of Jackson Hole and in the Gravelly range.
