This composition swirls together allusions to the Madonna, to Baubo (a face-crotched figure of jest and seduction in Greek mythology), to the serpent, and to more agricultural elements of a pollinating bee and historic botanical illustrations of cranberries. The illustration is an image transfer of the oddly shaped breed of cranberry, the “Bugle Cranberry,” sourced from the first-ever publication about cranberry cultivation from the 1800s.
