This work forms part of short series of paintings created as an homage to the African American history. Each knot carries its own significance in the narrative, to remind us of the events we can never forget. Forget-me-knot III features a piece of tie-dye fabric holding together two wooden stakes in a girth hitch knot, a knot often used in climbing. The sullied stake pointing backwards to represent past suffering and the cleaner stake pointing forward to recognize growth and an optimistic future. Taken together, this work symbolizes the perseverance of African Americans and their role as trailblazers for other oppressed groups.
