The seven stars honor the seven astronauts who perished in the explosion: commander Francis Scobee, pilot Michael Smith, mission specialists Judith Resnick, Ellison Onizuka, and Ronald McNair, and payload specialists Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe.
