Benjamin Bernstein fostered strong friendships with many of Philadelphia’s local artists and was an avid supporter of their work. He even gave some, including Julius Bloch, jobs in his storage business to supplement their income.
Bernstein’s close friendships with numerous artists
are captured in personal notes written on many of
the artworks in Villanova’s art collection. Joe
McGarvey, an industrial designer and painter who
attended the Philadelphia College of Art (now the
University of the Arts), inscribed his portrait of
Bernstein on the back: “For Ben, a message that
words could not portray, February 13, 1970.”
