Lee Bruner is known for his use of found materials, and Abstract applies this method to probe the possibilities of recycled materials. In this sculptural wall relief, the artist uses scrap metal and burlap—both known for their strength—as his primary materials. The metalwork remains scuffed, rusted, and bent in the finished piece. These attributes, combined with the burlap veiled canvas, underscore Bruner’s message: You can create what you want by using what you have. The artist embraces the imperfections of his materials and adds even more through buffing and uneven painting of the cloth. These faults do not hinder Abstract’s impact—they enhance its uniqueness. Bruner models sustainability through his own use of secondhand objects, imagining both the versatility and creativity that can be found by reusing cast-off materials.
