  • Artist: Irene Carmean Ponsell (American, 1908-2000)

Irene Hill Carmean Ponsell (1908-2000) was an American painter based in Delaware and the greater Philadelphia area. Born in Elton, NY, Ponsell attended the Bryant & Stratton Business College in Buffalo before working as a secretary with E.I du Pont de Nemours & Co.

Ponsell favored both oil and watercolor painting in her practice, creating many colorful and abstract works. In addition to hosting as many as thirteen one-woman exhibitions, Ponsell commonly delivered lectures on the appreciation and understanding of modern art. Her work is in the permanent collection of multiple galleries and universities across the East Coast.
