  • Artist: Fumio Yoshimura (Japanese, 1926-2002)

Fumio Yoshimura (1926-2002) was a Japanese and American sculptor best known for his wooden replicas of contemporary objects. After attending the Tokyo University of the Arts, Yoshimura moved to Manhattan, where he began to experiment with woodworking.

Creating wooden sculptures of bicycles, hotdog carts, and more, Yoshimura often described his work as the "ghost" of objects -- removing their humanity through his use of an unconventional medium. His work is currently in the permanent collection of various museums on the East Coast, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
