  • Artist: Edith Jaffy Kaplan

Edith Kaplan (1919-1995). Born New York City. Graduated Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia, PA, 1941. First female art director of an American advertising agency, N.W. Ayer & Son. Kaplan was deeply involved with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, and produced a series of lithographs based on the struggle. Voices of the Revolution was awarded the 1968 Best of the Year Award by the Philadelphia Printing Industry. This major milestone in her career is presently the subject of an exhibition at the State Museum of Pennsylvania. Her work is in national, public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Museum, the Library of Congress, and Johns Hopkins University. Edith Kaplan won many awards for both applied and fine arts during her varied career. Among these were the Outstanding Alumna Award in 1973 and an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts in 1996 from Moore College of Art and Design. She is listed in the database of important women artists at the National Museum of Women
